10월 13, 2025, Old Bakehouse Bolsdorf
In the long-gone days of our grandparents, a central bakehouse was common for the village community. In many places, these were eventually demolished. Here in Bolsdorf, however, it has been preserved and still bears witness to the old days.

The building, the "Old Forge", now serves as a village community center and event location. But as the name suggests, the 19th century building was once used to practice a very old craft that was an essential part of any village at the time. As the craft lost more and more importance in the 20th century, the craft was abandoned and the old building became vacant. In the 1980s, the property was purchased by the town of Hillesheim and extensively renovated in 1981. Since then, it has served as the center of the village for the residents of Bolsdorf.

Currently (2025) there is a large sign at the spring saying that the water is not drinkable. It's a shame, we were able to taste it on our last visit...

The Bolsdorfer Backhaus is Bolsdorf's oldest building. It dates from the 16th century. The bakehouse used to be used as a village bakehouse, as was common in many places in the Eifel. The bread supply for several weeks was baked by the villagers who did not have their own baking facilities on a baking date. In the Eifel, which used to be very poor, bread was an important and inexpensive staple food that covered a large part of the daily nutritional needs of the people of the Eifel in earlier centuries.

Bolsdorf is quite pretty, but you can save yourself the downhill and uphill dangling and cycle directly to Hillesheim.

"With an area of approx. 102 hectares, the area around the Gerolsteiner Dolomites has been a nature reserve since 1990. + occurring animal species: bat + occurring plant species: juniper, orchids, character plants calcareous grassland, grove rush-beech forest, woodruff-beech forest, orchid-limestone-beech forest Around 380 million years ago there was a warm, subtropical shallow sea here, in which mighty reefs of stromatopores - relatives of sponges - and corals formed. After the dolomitization, sinking and folding of the rocks, the Devonian deposits were lifted out again. Today's Gerolsteiner Dolomites were formed, which rise steeply above the Kylltal north of the center of Gerolstein. The rocks "Hustley", "Munterley", "Drohende Ley", "Große Kanzel" and "Auberg" characterize the cityscape from afar and form the landmark of Gerolstein. The most famous summit of the Gerolsteiner Dolomites is the "Munterley" - with a height of 482 meters - and offers a breathtaking view over Gerolstein, the Kylltal and far into the Vulkaneifel. Stone Age people, who settled here 30,000 years ago, obviously enjoyed this view, as evidenced by stone tools and bones found at the nearby Buchenloch Cave. Visiting the Gerolsteiner Dolomites can be perfectly combined with hiking the Felsenpfad - the northern part of the "Gerolsteiner Dolomiten Acht". The almost eight-kilometer round tour offers many magical places and geological traces." https://www.eifel.info/a-gerolsteiner-dolomites

7월 22, 2021, Shelter at Weinberg Celtic Way
The refuge is on the cultural hiking trail, this is station 9, Weinberg Celtic path. The vineyard is a petrified coral reef. If we add up the outline of this former limestone mine again, we can imagine how mighty this mountain once was. The remains of an old Celtic refugee castle have been found on the summit, a ring wall three to five meters high with a ditch around the outside. In such complexes the community gathered in times of danger with property (livestock). Later in the early Middle Ages, a residential tower was built in this fortress. Excavations have shown that it was a residence of a nobleman, the first Kerpen castle! Going back much further in history, around 390 million years ago, the landscape here was very different. Instead of land there was sea. A strait of sea stretched here from southern England to Poland. This area was currently south of the equator and was tropically warm. The sea was shallow and the clear water is rich in marine fauna, a community of coral reef-forming animals.

12월 20, 2020, View of Gerolstein from Munterley
The Munterley rises steeply above the city of fountains. The rock is extremely rugged and was once a refuge for Stone Age people. Celts and Romans inspired this place to build temples and sanctuaries. The dolomite rocks, which once lay in the sea ago and formed a coral reef, are Gerolstein's landmark. The traces of the previous generation can still be seen today: hewn stone tools were found in the beech hole cave. Source: https://www.eifel.de/go/sehenswertes-detail/munterley_gerolstein.html

Drees (mineral spring) The Sauerbrunnen, called Drees, is located about 2.5 km southeast of Dockweiler in a wooded area and springs from Lower Devonian rock strata. As a typical phenomenon of volcanism, carbonic acid rises from the cracks and chasms, mixes with deep water and groundwater and then emerges as healing mineral water. In addition to the carbonic acid content, the rust-red deposits are characteristic of the spring water. The water is a refreshing drink because of its high mineral content. A log cabin was erected next to the attractively framed "Dreesquelle". It offers hikers and nature lovers protection and invites them to linger. From the car park on the main road, the route can also be easily covered by bicycle. The location in the midst of a fantastic wooded area and the nearby "Alte Bach" flowing past underline the idyll of the place. (Source: https://www.dockweiler.info/drees-mineralquelle)
