The neoclassical palace was originally built in 1776 as a summer residence for Landgrave Carl of Hesse and his wife Louise, daughter of the Danish King Frederick V. In 1949, Duke Frederick of Schleswig-Holstein founded the boarding school here. Well-known personalities such as coffee king Albert Darboven, Countess Christiane zu Rantzau (Christie's auction house), and shipowner Erck Rickmers attended school here.

Karlsburg Castle is in the municipality of Winnemark, which in turn belongs to the district of Schwansen. All of these places and communities belong to the Schwansen region.
