The eruption of the former Laacher See volcano 250,000 years ago threw tephra (ash) into the air, which covered the Middle Rhine Basin as a meter-high layer of pumice (16 billion cubic metres). In Nickenich, the pumice stone stretched from the Krufter oven to the Hummerich. During dismantling and backfilling, the lake was created by groundwater. You can swim in the lake only on weekdays in the marked area.
