This place was formerly called Grießberg or Greisberg. The name refers to the natural soil composition of sand, gravelly sand, and shell limestone scree. In Middle High German, it was referred to as "griez." It wasn't until the 19th century, as part of romanticizing the area and promoting tourism, that it received the name Gerichtsberg (Court Hill). During this time, a movement formed in Heldburg to beautify the town and its surrounding areas, aiming to develop Heldburg as a summer resort.
