Both rivers flow around the Rotehorn Island and rejoin in the city area. The Alte Elbe is not navigable for shipping. It is blocked by a weir, the Cracauer Waterfall. The weir is intended to maintain a sufficient water level in the Stromelbe for shipping at low water levels. The Alte Elbe only has a stronger flow when the water level is higher.
