Archduke Leopold Ludwig inherited the property in 1854. Hernstein Castle owes its current appearance to him. He spent 28 years rebuilding and expanding the castle according to plans by Theophil Hansen, who is also the architect of the Parliament in Vienna. The Villateich with the island in Lichtenwörth was recently renovated. The new widened sidewalks invite you to take a walk and several park benches offer a good place to sit and relax. Until the middle of the 15th century there was a moated castle on this island, called the Veste Lichtenwerd. Unfortunately, the "villa" that once bordered this beautiful pond, from which it got its name, no longer exists either. The once magnificent building was demolished more than 65 years ago. There are still some old trees from every great era, such as the giant plane tree that stood in the immediate vicinity of the villa. They are silent witnesses who have certainly seen a lot over time and yet have to fear for their existence. A completely healthy, approximately 250-year-old tree to the left of the main entrance to the island was not allowed to stay - a pity about that.

The Pioneer Pond is located in the middle of the Academy Park. The inflow comes from a small channel that branches off from the Mühlbach. It gets its name from its former purpose: pioneer technical training. Today the Pioneer Pond is stocked with fish and is a breeding ground for wild ducks and other water birds. Please note: Cycling is only permitted on the signposted paths on the Academy grounds. Occasional reprimands from military personnel!
