A lovely spot, even if you're there outside of opening hours. Thanks to the gate, you can see the beginning of the tunnel. There are benches, a fountain, a hut, and a gold panning area all around.

An exciting cave beneath the Prince's Rock, partially walled, with seating and a fireplace. It was probably a former shelter used by forestry workers or hunters.

If you're in the area, you should definitely visit this highlight. Not only is the descent down the metal stairs spectacular, but walking through the rock formation is also a real experience! A few hundred meters further on, the view from the Prince's Rock is worth it. The climb up the rather steep stairs and the view from the top is a real experience!

Silver iron was mainly mined in the Gleissinger Fels. The mine looks back on a 500-year history and is the only accessible silver iron mine in the world. Some of the deeper mining sites can be explored, provided they are not filled with water. During the regular tours on an easily accessible floor of the mine, you can wear a mining helmet and go into hand-mined tunnels that are over 500 years old. Everything sparkles and glitters - the shiny ore on the walls shows the way. Visitors can be inspired by the unique mining atmosphere, the underground waterfall and great stories.

The rock groups of the Girgel Cave (some also say Girgel Cave) in the Tröstauer Forest are classified as a landscape protection area of the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park and as a geotope of granite blocks with cotton grass weathering. A marking with white arrows leads from the back exit through a tangle of rocks and rock groups, which reminds a little of the Luisenburg labyrinth, but of course cannot keep up in size.

The two high rock towers made of granite were named Prinzenfelsen in 1911. Before that, they had different names in the vernacular. The larger one with the climbing facility and the viewing point is the Prinz-Ludwig-Felsen, the smaller one is the Prinz-Leopold-Felsen. The Fichtelgebirgsverein built the climbing facility in 1913. It is looked after by the Nagel local group.

The new visitor center was opened at the mine in 2023. Now it is even more interesting and modern there. More information here: https://www.fichtelgebirge.bayern/detail/id=5f802ff53e91d003a390bb39

The "Schmutzlerzeche" visitor mine with its shelter can be visited at Goldberg. The 35-meter-deep, accessible tunnel still reveals a gold-bearing quartz vein and the arduous work of the miners. The mine was first mentioned by name around 1400. It is assumed that over 500 miners worked here at that time. The heyday of local gold mining was between 1430 and 1470. The outbreak of the Thirty Years' War brought gold mining to a complete standstill. Mining resumed in 1662 after a long hiatus. This is also thanks to Alexander von Humboldt, who revived mining in 1792. From 1907 onward, a mining company attempted to continue gold mining using modern methods. Around 1920, this evolved into the Fichtelgold Mining Company. The analysis of the gold-bearing quartz-antimony-arsenic ore veins revealed a content of 35 grams of gold and 22 grams of silver per ton of raw ore. Mining ceased in 1925 for financial reasons. The Schmutzler Mine has been open to visitors since 1985.

I was there as a child and enjoyed the insights into the underworld.

Silver and Iron Ore are mutually exclusive. The high proportion of shimmering silver mica led to the iron ore mine being called a silver iron mine. The visit is worthwhile. Photography is not allowed underground.

Very impressive cave with a sad history as a place of refuge. Accessible from both sides via stairs. Better from above, as you can then slide down the rock.

In 1478, the Lords of Hirschberg were given permission by Elector Philip, with reservation of the toll ore and sale within two to three miles of Mehlmeisel, to mine all metals. This revitalized the mining around today's Fichtelberg as well as many rumors about gold and silver deposits. However, until the beginning of the 17th century, only the local demand for ore was met and gold or silver was never found; there was still no well-known mining and no extensive iron production. In 1600 Frederick IV issued mountain freedoms, which ensured a new upswing in mining. Source and further information https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Besucherbergwerk_Gleißinger_Fels

With the miner's lamp in hand, it goes through old hand-cut tunnels.
