The two high rock towers made of granite were named Prinzenfelsen in 1911. Before that, they had different names in the vernacular. The larger one with the climbing facility and the viewing point is the Prinz-Ludwig-Felsen, the smaller one is the Prinz-Leopold-Felsen. The Fichtelgebirgsverein built the climbing facility in 1913. It is looked after by the Nagel local group.

In a borderline description of 1435 the rocks are called "Scheferstain", 1536 "Schäferstein" and 1716 "Schieferstein". Popularly they were called "Girglstein", derived from the nearby Girgelhöhle. On November 25, 1911, in the presence of members of the Fichtelgebirgsverein, the rocks off the footpath were renamed "Prinzenfelsen" at a ceremony to promote their fame. The Prince Ludwig rock is the larger and the Prince Leopold rock the smaller rock tower. This name was chosen to commemorate the 1905 and 1910 visits by the two Wittelsbachers in the Fichtelgebirge.

If you're in the area, you should definitely visit this highlight. Not only is the climb up the stairs spectacular, but the view from the top is also worth it. The Girgel Cave, a few hundred meters away, is also a real experience!
