The approximately two-hectare city moat is located in the heart of Wolfenbüttel. The body of water, which is the size of two large football stadiums, is used for a variety of purposes, which, however, also results in a lack of suitable refuges for rare (aquatic) animals and plants. And: Feeding waterfowl, as well as branches falling into the city moat, results in too many nutrients in the water. This has a negative impact on water quality and aquatic organisms, says Udo Berger, chairman of the angling club. The club has now implemented a joint project with the city of Wolfenbüttel to counteract these disadvantages for the local flora and fauna. However, the diverse use of the water body also results in a lack of suitable refuges for rarer (aquatic) animals and plants, and the nutrient load in the water body is constantly increasing due to uncontrolled feeding of waterfowl, which has a negative impact on water quality and aquatic organisms (such as fish and aquatic insects). Depending on the season, numerous birds can be seen from the closed bird watching stand.

The paths are wet, but a detour to the ponds is worth it - the view over the water is truly idyllic.
