The castle is located within the town near the Altmühl River on a rocky ledge. Only a few remains of the 12th-century main castle remain. However, parts of the outer bailey, including the so-called "castle stables" added to the castle wall in 1444, and the castle gate, have been preserved.

Great day trip destination, although the castle isn't that big. But it takes an hour to walk around it with kids.

The hike from Dollnstein to Wellheim and on to the Naturfreundehaus in the direction of Aichach and then back is also highly recommended.
