The Castle of Cola is an Iron Age hillfort that was later reinforced as an Islamic fortress in Portugal’s Alentejo region, now classified as a National Monument. It forms the centre of the Castro da Cola archaeological park, which features Megalithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze, and Iron Age remains. The polygonal fortification, with thick walls, a towered entrance, and a rock-hewn cistern, was strategically positioned to guard a key route into the Algarve.

Moura Castle is a very old fortress, composed of round and square towers, and is the first fortress known to Moura. The Convent of Our Lady of the Assumption was built here, which incorporated the Church of Santiago, the former Moorish mosque, and became the mother church.

As with most castles in Portugal, not only is admission free, but you can even climb the often completely unsecured castle walls via adventurous staircases. Something like that would be unthinkable in Germany for security reasons, but we think it's great.

There's plenty to see in Beja, including the Sé Catedral de Beja, the castle, and a lovely shopping street with numerous restaurants. However, it's undeniable that the ravages of time have taken their toll on this city; if you like morbid charm, this is the place for you. The town's greatest advantage, however, is its very central location in the heart of the Alentejo.

Situated at a high point in the midst of the Alentejo plains, and offering extensive views over the distant horizons, the graceful town of Alvito has grown around its palatial castle, where the Pousada de Alvito is now housed. The white houses give Alvito the distinct and unmistakable appearance of an Alentejo town, many of them having doors framed by Manueline-style arches, revealing their seventeenth-century origin. The settlement of this town dates back to the early days of the Portuguese monarchy. The town was granted its first charter by the king D. Dinis in 1327, later confirmed by D. Manuel in 1516. The Alvito Castle, whose construction began in 1494, is undoubtedly one of the most curious buildings of its kind in Portugal. Visiting it helps to evoke memories of the town´s historical past. The long Moorish presence in this region left its distinctive marks in the Mudejar architecture clearly visible in various monuments (which laymen can easily recognise through the small cupolas and white-painted conical pinnacles). The parish church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, dating back to the early sixteenth century, has certain exterior decorative features that clearly identify it as an example of Mudejar architecture. A modest Renaissance doorway leads to the interior, its walls covered in azulejo panels whose beautiful patterns are a harmonious blend of blue and yellow. In the upper choir, there is a large seventeenth-century altarpiece of carved and gilded wood. The same Mudejar influence is also to be noted in the small fortified chapel of São Sebastião, crowned by an array of chamfered merlons. Inside, painted on the vaulted Gothic ceiling are frescos depicting musical angels. Attention is also drawn to the town hall with its picturesque clock tower, a typical feature of Alentejo architecture. Two almost adjoining churches, the Igreja da Misericórdia and the Igreja da Senhora das Candeias (the latter housing a museum of Sacred Art), are equally interesting buildings of some architectural merit, as is the small chapel of Santa Luzia on the outskirts of the town, which was originally a Muslim oratory.

From this tower, we have a spectacular view of the Alentejo landscape. The fields are now full of olive and almond trees, but in the past, they were cultivated with wheat.

3월 29, 2025, Museu Jorge Vieira
The Museu Jorge Vieira in Beja, Portugal, is a small but notable art museum dedicated to the works of Jorge Vieira, a renowned Portuguese sculptor. Visitors generally appreciate the opportunity to explore the artist's unique sculptural pieces, which showcase his distinctive style and creativity. The museum is housed in a historic building, which adds to its charm. While the collection is not extensive, it provides a focused look at Vieira's artistic journey and his contributions to Portuguese modern art. Some visitors note that the museum could benefit from more detailed information about the artworks and the artist's life. The intimate setting allows for a close examination of the sculptures, but some find the space somewhat limited. Overall, the museum offers an interesting glimpse into Jorge Vieira's work, though it may not appeal to those seeking a more comprehensive art experience.

The Jorge Vieira Museum is part of the artistic collection that the sculptor Jorge Vieira donated to the Beja City Council in 1994. Housed in a building in the historic city centre since May 1995, it has been located in the former Governor's house in Beja Castle since 1 September 2019, housing an important collection of sculptures, models and drawings by Jorge Vieira, a visual artist who left his mark on Portuguese art throughout the 20th century. Jorge Ricardo da Conceição Vieira was born in Lisbon on 16 November 1922. Between 1944 and 1953 he attended the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, where he first enrolled in architecture and later switched to sculpture. He was a student of Simões de Almeida and Leopoldo de Almeida and worked in the studios of António Duarte, Francisco Franco and António Rocha. He participated in several artistic gatherings of the time, together with numerous figures of Portuguese culture, such as Sena da Silva, Lagoa Henriques, Dias Coelho, João Abel Manta, among others. In 1953, he entered the International Sculpture Competition The Unknown Political Prisoner, promoted by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, in London. Among more than 2,500 competitors, representing 54 countries, he was the only Portuguese selected, exhibiting his work, together with the other winners, at the Tate Gallery. In 1954, he moved to London to attend the Slade School of Fine Arts, working under the guidance of Henry Moore, F. E. Mc’William and Reg Butler. He returned to Portugal in 1956, where he resumed his teaching activity, participating, since then, in numerous group and solo exhibitions, in Portugal and abroad, winning several awards. His works are in several cities and collections in the country. His connection to Beja was strengthened in 1994, when his Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner was inaugurated at a roundabout leading into the city, an initiative of the city's Municipality. It was after this relationship grew stronger that the sculptor decided to donate part of his estate to the city of Beja. Jorge Vieira died in Estremoz in 1998.

3월 16, 2025, Castelo de Moura
Rising above Moura's old town on a limestone plateaux are the ruins of a once grand castle. The medieval Castelo de Moura was built by King Dom Dinis in the 13th century on the site of an earlier Moorish citadel. There is evidence that the site is even older than this suggesting there was originally an Iron Age hill fort here. The medieval castle was a mixture of old and new including the remains of the Moorish castle and a new watchtower, the remains of which can be seen today. One of the original Moorish towers remained; the Salúquia tower, named after princess Salúquia, the daughter of the Muslim governor Abu Hassan. It is said that when the christians reconquered the town she threw herself from the top of this tower. Over subsequent years the castle was further expanded and fortified. During the 16th century the convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção was incorporated into the castle grounds, being built on the site of the earlier Moorish mosque. It is said that the convent was home to the tombs of Pedro and Álvaro Rodrigues who were responsible for the reconquest of Moura from the Moors. The castle was almost destroyed during the Spanish War of Succession under the command of the Duke of Osuna in 1707. Further damage was caused by the 1755 earthquake leaving the Moura Castle in ruins. Today the castle is home to landscaped gardens, a military museum and an archaeological museum. It is also a great viewpoint for the town and surrounding countryside including the nearby Alqueva dam.

Reigning over the town, Serpa’s castle is a charming ruin after being sacked by the Spanish and lying abandoned since the 1600s. But that takes nothing away from the monument, as its battlements are still intact and you can scramble up to survey the town and the Alentejo countryside. There has been some kind of fortress up here since at least the Romans, but this castle’s timeline begins with the Moors in the 700s. During the Reconquista in the 12th and 13th centuries the it was besieged by both Christian and Moorish forces before Afonso III finally conquered the Algarve to the south. Get a good look at the fabric of the walls, as you might discover some recycled Roman funerary stones with inscriptions still legible.

Beja Castle is a National Monument. A medieval fortification that is the city's most emblematic monument. Its Keep Tower, almost 40 metres high, is considered by some authors to be the tallest military tower in the country. Beja Castle, and its Keep Tower in particular, is the city's best-known and most emblematic monument. It is a Gothic fortress whose construction began in the 13th century, shortly after the Christian conquest of the city, and continued through the 14th and possibly 15th centuries. Standing out from the fortress complex is the imposing Keep Tower, almost forty metres high, considered by some experts to be a masterpiece of European Gothic military architecture. In addition to the castle, the walls that, dating from the same period, surrounded the medieval city are still visible, with twenty-eight towers and their respective sections of the wall remaining.

Currently part of the medieval castle, outside the citadel, this arch has undergone several changes over the centuries. Some authors say that it was built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, as part of the Roman walls and as one of the gateways to the city, but was demolished in the 16th century. The year 1938 is mentioned as the date of its reconstruction, with the remains that remained integrated into buildings that have since been demolished. It is also known as the ‘Portas de Évora’ and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
