The Kastellet is one of the best-preserved fortifications in the city of Copenhagen.

The building is shaped like a five-pointed star with bastions at its tips. In addition to military installations, it houses a church and a windmill.

Although the Kastellet is still used by the Danish military, today it serves primarily as a tourist destination and recreational area. It is located in the northeast of the city,

not far from Østerport Station, and is served by bus lines 15, 19, 26, and 1A.

Admission is free; the Kastellet is open daily from 6 a.m. until sunset. The grounds include a nature-based park, which is also extensively used by
Copenhagen residents and is home to numerous animals.

There are also two smaller museums within the complex. A military changing of the guard ceremony takes place daily at 12 p.m. In the summer, military music concerts are held at 2 p.m., which are also worthwhile.

A large concert takes place every year on October 28.

The castle is near the Little Mermaid. So when you are there, you can pay a visit to the fort. The fort itself is located on a small island and is arranged in a star shape. You can walk inside as well as "on" the former walls. From there you also have a nice view of the harbor.

The fort, built according to Pietro Cataneo's ideal design, takes the place of a rampart built under King Christian IV in 1625 at the entrance to the harbour. With the loss of land east of Øresund in 1658, the redoubt gained increased strategic importance. The order for the expansion was given to the Dutchman Henrik Ruse, who had previously worked on the expansion of Harburg Fortress. The expansion was completed in 1667, but there were repeated conversions as a result. In 1892 the eastern part of the fortress was ceded to the city of Copenhagen, which had a road and a railway line laid through the fort. Extensive renovations took place after 1945.

The complex, built in the form of an almost regular pentagon within a system of moats, has the five bastions Kongens Bastion, Dronningens Bastion, Prinsens Bastion, Prinsessens Bastion and Grevens Bastion, several upstream ravelins (wall shield) and counterguards[A 1]; access is via the Sjaellandsporten Gate (Kongeporten; with a bust of King Frederik III by François Dusart) and the Norwegian Gate (Norgesporten) designed by Lambert van Haven. Inside are the commandant's house (Kommandantbolig) by Elias David Häusser from 1725, the church designed as a rectangular hall with a wooden barrel in the central axis of the complex, the immediately adjacent prison and symmetrically arranged barracks and magazines. A windmill was built on Kongen's bastion.

Well-maintained citadel with defensive bastions, access bridges, a monument. Is still used by the Danish army in some areas. Publicly accessible indoors and in front of the ramparts. Beautiful views from the ramparts to the harbor area.
