A very beautiful castle complex

One of many highlights of Jægerspris alongside the castle. Dismount and wander around the red brick buildings and enjoy the quiet atmosphere. Danner Cafe or the excellent ice cream shop nearby offer a welcome reward.

Gurrehus is a privately inhabited castle in the Rosenborg style.

Very nice castle with well-kept parks. You can tell the Queen is here occasionally.

A beautiful moated castle with a small museum shop. We weren't inside, so no information about the innards possible. Good to use as a focal point for hikes and walks in the area.

The first part of the castle was built in 1560 by King Frederik II, who had acquired the Hillerødsholm estate through a land exchange. His son, Christian IV, however, demolished most of his father's castle and built a new one between 1600 and 1625. It is built in the Dutch Renaissance style. Frederik II had several small garden pavilions built around the castle. The sauna, which still stands in the nature reserve surrounding the castle and is still used by the royal court, was built between 1580 and 1581. On December 17, 1859, the castle was ravaged by a devastating fire. The castle was rebuilt between 1860 and 1884 by the architect Ferdinand Meldahl with financial support from the brewer J.C. In German further down Gurrehus is not far from the much-visited castle ruins. The origins go back several centuries. It was rebuilt in 1881 in the style of Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. In 1914, Prince George of Greece became the new owner and the castle was rebuilt in neoclassical style. During World War II, it was used by the German occupying forces and then by the Red Cross. After Prince Georg's death in 1959, the Danish military took over the building and used it as an officers' school and course location. During the Cold War, the National Police set up a command post in a specially protected basement. In 1999, the state abandoned the property, and a construction company left the building empty for years. In 2012, the house was renovated by a new owner and has since been used as a private residence. The Gurrehus country castle is located close to the much-visited ruin.
