Our Heldburg Forestry District comprises 12 forest districts and is also the southernmost forestry district in the Free State of Thuringia. The Heldburg region, the Gleichberge hills, and the castles of Straufhain and Heldburg are attractive destinations for forest visitors. Our district office in Heldburg is also worth seeing – a building steeped in forestry history. Our forestry district is characterized by extensive oak forests in the south – which is why the oak is the "characteristic tree species" of our district. North of the Werra River, for example around Hildburghausen, coniferous pine and spruce forests predominate, while the "Franconian Threshold" south of the Werra is characterized by beech-rich deciduous forests. Bertholdsburg Castle is the most important secular building in southern Thuringia. The castle's origins probably date back to the 13th century.

The Baroque palace was built in several phases at the end of the 17th and 18th centuries (1694-1786) as a summer residence for the abbots of Langheim. During the first phase, the Langheim abbot Gallus Knauer had the eastern wing built between 1694 and 1698, based on plans attributed to Johann Leonard Dietzenhofer. The later sections of the west wing and western central wing were originally constructed as four-story outbuildings. The four floors reached a total height equal to the three living floors of the first building section. However, by the end of the 18th century, there was already a desire to make the palace-like three-wing complex more prestigious.
