From 1827 onwards, a modern forest administration was established in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen based on different forest structures.

In order to create a single forestry department in the Heldburger Land, work began in 1881 on a “representative forestry establishment” as a centrally located administration. After several unsuccessful attempts to acquire existing buildings in Heldburg, it was decided to build a new building in the Neuhof district (domain) on the “Chaussee” to Heldburg (current location).

From the very beginning, Duke George II was intensively involved in the planning. Government and senior building officer Otto Hoppe was commissioned with the planning, while master architect Karl Rommel carried out the construction work from 1884-1886. On July 26, 1886, the forestry department was “transferred”.

Between 2001 and 2015, the entire listed ensemble was renovated as a modern administrative and operational facility.
