At the tropical zoo Randers Regnskov you will be transported to a tropical ambience with free-living monkeys, iguanas, sloths, jaguars and many other exotic animals. The tropical zoo is a real sensory bombardment of tropical nature experiences with fascinating animals from South America, Africa and Asia. In the tropical climate with lianas, large waterfalls, fantastic plants and many free-living animals, you feel like you are transported to a world that you can normally only reach after a flight of several hours. The air is warm and humid and full of the sounds of the various animals that live here. In the treetops above the visitors, monkeys jump around and play while bats and sloths rest. On the forest floor, leaf-cutter ants work tirelessly to drag pieces of leaves into their burrows. Manatees quietly make their rounds and Komodo dragons doze in sunny spots. On November 2nd, 1882, the monument to the famous Danish freedom fighter, Niels Ebbesen, was erected on the "Rådhustorvet" (Town Hall Square) in Randers. Niels Ebbesen (he lived around 1318-85) went down in Danish history when he liberated Denmark from the ruthless rule of the German count, Gerhard III of Holstein in 1340. Jutland was at the time mortgaged to him and his methods for collecting taxes were quite brutal and led to much resistance among the Jutlanders. One night, between April 1st and 2nd, 1340, Niels Ebbesen gathered a handful of men - and they allowed Count Gert to visit him. During this visit, Niels Ebbesen used his sword to chop off the count's head from his body - with a single blow. From then on, Jutland was free again. The material of the statue consists of cannons from the Danish warship "Dannebrog" and it was made by the artist, F. E. Ring. Idealistic and artistic, it can be seen as a counterpart to H. W. Bissen's Landsoldat in Fredericia. Unveiled: 2.11.1882 Location: Town Hall Square Material: Bronze Height: approx. 7 m https://www.visitaarhus.de/region-aarhus/reiseplanung/niels-ebbesen-gdk605004 https://skulpturer.randers.dk/skulpturer/23-fe-ring-niels-ebbesen/

Rådhustorvet in Randers is the city's central square with the old white town hall on the east side of the square. The old town hall was inaugurated in 1778 and until 1930 was located three meters further south than its current location. In the middle of Rådhustorvet stands the statue of Niels Ebbesen, who killed the German count Gert in 1340. Learn more about the story of Niels Ebbesen and visit Niels Ebbesen's house. The statue was erected 130 years ago as a result of the mood in Denmark after the loss of North Schleswig in 1864. The Danes were looking for heroes and national symbols, and Niels Ebbesen was an obvious candidate with his uprising against the Germans. The statue therefore also faces south - so he can keep an eye on the Germans. The seven-meter-high monument was designed by sculptor F.E. Ring and erected with funds from the local citizens' committee. The statue itself was made from old cannons from the warship Dannebrog. https://www.visitaarhus.de/region-aarhus/reiseplanung/radhustorvet-und-niels-ebbesen-eine-station-auf-der-sternenroute-durch-randers-gdk882695

Experience the Viking Age first hand at Fyrkat, one of Denmark's five ring castles. Fyrkat Castle was built in 980 under King Harald Bluetooth. None of the original ring castles still exist today, but at Fyrkat an earthen rampart marks the place where the ring castle surrounded the original 16 longhouses. The position of the houses is now marked with white stones. Just outside the castle, one of the longhouses has been reconstructed. In the immediate vicinity of Fyrkat Castle is the Viking settlement, which consists of nine reconstructed houses. Together, these form a manor house as we know it from Harald Bluetooth's time. Both houses and workshops, including the smithy, are built of oak and have clay-plastered walls and thatched roofs. During the summer, there are activities on selected days at the Viking settlement, where you will also find a visitor center, a museum shop and a mythological playground. Fyrkat is on the UNESCO list of intangible world heritage sites, along with the four other Danish ring castles – Aggersborg, Borgring, Nonnebakken and Trelleborg. https://nordjyskemuseer.dk/de/u/vikingemuseet-fyrkat-de/
