These waterfalls are the largest in Sweden.

A dense forest of bearded trees grows around the waterfall. The ground is covered with moss. It's easy to imagine ugly trolls and beautiful fairies among the trees. The area around Tännforsen is unusual due to the uniform and high humidity that the fog from the rapids creates. The area is therefore home to rare and very special plants and animals.

The Tännforsen waterfall has been threatened several times by hydropower development. The last time this happened was in the 1940s, when the Norwegian Water Authority wanted to build large dams and dam the water. But the residents of the area didn't want Tännforsen to go quiet. They put up fierce resistance and in the end the waterfall was protected. The area has been a nature reserve since 1971 - and Jämtland's most popular excursion destination.

A romantic place above the roaring waters of the Tännforsen is the “Kyssarnas bänk”, the “kisser bench”.

At the “Näckens udde”, the “tip of the neck”, you can view the mighty waterfall from below. At the end of May/beginning of June, when the Tännforsen has the most water, an amount of liquid shoots over the edge that would fill the huge Globen Arena in Stockholm within a quarter of an hour.

A footbridge was built over the thundering waterfall for visitors right on the sixty-meter-wide edge of the cliff. However, in the icy winter it is closed for safety reasons.

Tännforsen is the most powerful waterfall in Sweden. It is located 22 kilometers northwest of Åre on the upper reaches of the Åreälven. Here the river forms several lakes. Lake Tännsjön flows over Tännfors into Lake Östra Noren, 37 meters lower. The waterfall was formed on the steep edge of an overhanging rocky plateau formed by the folding of the Scandinavian mountain range approximately 500 million years ago. A special climate develops near a large waterfall like Tännforsen. The mist caused by the waterfall supports interesting and unusual lichen species on the slates and trees.
