Magical eight acres of landscaped ornamental gardens with herbaceous borders, riverside walk, rose garden, water-lily canal, alpine garden and a silent space as well as five acres of orchards. Founded by Beatrix Havergal (1901–1980) who established the Waterperry School of Horticulture in 1932 until her retirement in 1971. A historic centre of horticulture, Waterperry Gardens is a beautiful spot just south of the village of the same name. There's a lovely cafe and a farm shop, as well as the Museum of Rural Life. The estate is free to mooch around, though you will need to purchase a ticket to view the formal gardens and dogs are not allowed in this area. Brill Windmill is always a highlight, but spotting a wild stoat on the track (I was standing still having a drink and saw a low slink of brown fur crossing in front of me, it turned looked and recrossed again flashing its white stomach fur), and walking during lambing season is a thrill, especially positive during Covid-19.
