Roque de los Muchachos, situated on the rim of the Caldeira crater, is the highest peak on La Palma at 2,426 meters. From here, the entire island lies at your feet. On the horizon, Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro float in the shimmering silver Atlantic. Below you, the rugged depths of the Caldeira de Taburiente open up, often shrouded in trade wind clouds. The telescope landscape of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) is also impressive and photogenic. Over 20 telescopes are set up here, exploring the cosmos. The ORM is one of the largest observatories in the world. Nowhere else will you feel so close to the stars. You absolutely shouldn't miss this breathtaking region on La Palma – come hike, explore, and marvel.

The Mirador del Espigón del Roque at Roque de los Muchachos actually consists of two viewpoints, the second of which feels even further out over the caldera rim. To reach it, you should definitely have a head for heights, as the narrow path leads you along the edge of the precipice, making you feel like you're flying. The view is equally fantastic from both spots. On a clear day, you can see the three neighboring islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro. It can get quite crowded, with many people wanting to experience these breathtaking views. When I was there, the visitors seemed awestruck and silently enjoyed the panorama. It was wonderfully quiet.

A perfectly maintained and easily accessible viewpoint. The hike starts at the parking lot at Roque de los Muchachos. A small path begins next to the information booth, initially climbing slightly. The trail leads along a reddish ridge of porous rock, passing various natural viewpoints. These offer a series of beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding gorge and mountain landscape. The trail continues past a fenced area where you can see rare and endangered species of native flora that are being bred here for re-introduction. After about ten minutes, you reach the first small rocky peak. This offers impressive views of Roque Chico in the foreground, Barranco de los Cantos to the left, Barranco de Hoyo Verde to the right, and the lower peaks of Los Agujeritos. From here, the trail leads slightly to the right and descends briefly before reaching the Espigón plateau. In good weather, the view from here extends to the neighboring islands.

The hike from Roque de los Muchachos to Espigón del Roque falls into the "easy" category and is therefore also suitable for hikers with less fitness. However, a head for heights is advantageous. Along the way, you'll pass several rocky outcrops with steep drops. Due to the special lighting conditions and the shadow effects, the hike should be undertaken either at dawn or dusk. The volcano doesn't look that dangerous. It still smokes a little in the morning. But when you look at the extent of the eruption, you realize how massive the eruption was. So many houses and plantations were destroyed. Really bad...

The normal hiking trail to Pico Bejenado starts from the hiking car park. The road there is not the best, however; it is better to park right at the beginning of the trail and start the hike from there.

It is a good place to leave your car to start the tour to Pico Bejenado. To get here you just have to drive along a fairly rough gravel road. You could also leave the car right at the start of the gravel road and walk from there.
