What a place to ride? An excellent place to summit as the sun sets in the west.

The infamous Hardknott Pass is a real challenge for drivers but parking at the top of the pass opens up a wealth of adventure opportunities. Hiking to the Wainwright summit of Hard Knott from here is easy, while Harter Fell is also an excellent objective to the south. It's also an ideal start point for a wild camping expedition into Upper Eskdale.

mega techy at the beginning, had to push probably half way up before I could start riding anything meaningfully. From about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way up including it all after the gate. Conditions were perfect on the day but had lots of bad weather recently so might have been worse than usual condition. Rode on ebike

Tough ride, wouldn't fancy trying it with a loaded bike! Absolutely stunning views though, so highly recommend it. Don't feel bad if you need to get off and push for some segments!

I had a wonderful outing on Harter Fell. Parking down in the bottom of the valley at Jubilee Bridge I took in the Roman Fort and then went up to to Hard Knott Hill and then over to Harter Fell. All on a sunny blue sky day. The roman fort was very interesting and the views all round were great. The views from Harter Fell topped the lot...plus the little scramble to get to the true summit of course.

I have a real soft spot for Hard Knott! I absolutely love the view to the Scafell range from here and I once hiked from Hard Knott all the way up to Esk Pike without seeing another person all morning. This area really is beautiful and, at 1,801 feet (549 m), Hard Knott itself is quite straight forward to hike from Hardknott Pass. Many see it as a bonus that you can drive up most of the ascent and start the climb from around the 1,300-foot (400 m) mark.
