The Saut du Doubs is a 27-meter-high waterfall located along the Doubs River, which forms the border between France and Switzerland here. The waterfall is the result of a paleohistoric landslide that filled the narrow, gorge-like Doubs Valley, which cuts deep into the limestone formations of the Folded Jura, about 14,000 years ago.

The source of the Doubs River is a powerful karst spring in a heavily karstified area of the Jura Mountains. It lies at an altitude of 937 meters at the foot of the forested, up to 1,419-meter-high Mont Risoux mountain range, which straddles the border between France and Switzerland. The Doubs River rises from a small, approximately five-meter-deep spring basin in a cave in the rock.

A ship tunnel (1810) that can be walked through from the side as a shortcut for the Le Doubs river canal. On the other side of the canal there is a lock about 3-4 m high. There is a water curtain at both portals and the interior is beautifully and decoratively lit. Worth seeing.

The Verneau is an underground river in the Franche-Comté Jura. It collects water from the Déservillers plateau and comes to the surface near Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne before flowing into the Lison. It is one of the largest underground rivers in France. During our visit, we found a notice saying that it is forbidden to enter the area around the spring or waterfall.

This highlight is located on the plateau under which the cave opening is located. It can be found via a dead-end path, but the view is a bit sobering.

The Sarrasine Cave impresses with its 90 m high portal. A 40 m thick layer of limestone separates it from the upper part of the plateau. The cave system has been explored for about 4 km, and hikers equipped with a flashlight can access it up to a small lake inside. https://www.lieux-insolites.fr

Very beautifully laid out and developed. There are also interesting information boards, e.g. about the underground connection of the local springs. At the end of the 19th century, a mill owner wanted to divert the water from the spring, which, after intervention by the population and a member of parliament, led to the first French environmental protection law. https://www.montagnes-du-jura.fr/

Creux Billard is a mighty valley with a diameter of around 60m, with sides rising 90m high. There is not much of a spectacle here like at the Lison waterfall - the place impresses with its dimensions and (if there is any) with its silence (but the echo is also good)

An interesting hiking experience to have two viewpoints 5m away and not be able to cross. The view is actually better on the French side 😉 The "Saut du Doubs" is a 27-meter-high waterfall on the Doubs, which is located on the French-Swiss border. During periods of flooding on the Doubs, kayak records have been set here for overcoming the waterfall.
