Bern Town Hall (built between 1406 and 1417) The Town Hall, built between 1406 and 1417, housed the meeting rooms for the Small and Great Councils. The Kreuzgasse (Cross Lane) gained prominence as an urban center (Zähringer town) with the construction of the new Town Hall between 1406 and 1417. While the mayor and council had already possessed a modest meeting place since the mid-13th century in the courthouse behind the choir of St. Vincent's Church (parish church of St. Vincent), this consisted of only a small council or courtroom. The old town hall was too small for the meetings of the Council of Two Hundred, established during the constitutional reform of 1294, nor for the annual council elections held during the Easter holidays, nor for the periodic accounting of the city's officials and administrators. Therefore, since the second half of the 13th century, citizens and council members had held their meetings in the spacious monastery churches of the Franciscans and Dominicans. Only proceedings concerning the lower courts were usually held in the corner building next to the chancel of the parish church by the mayor, his deputy, the bailiff, and the court clerk. The Bernese Arcades are one of the most distinctive features of Bern's UNESCO-protected Old Town. Brief description: * What are they? They are covered, arcade-like walkways that extend along the main streets of the Old Town at ground level. * Length: With a total length of approximately six kilometers, they form one of the longest weather-protected shopping promenades in Europe. * Origin: The arcades were built from sandstone after the devastating city fire of 1405 during the reconstruction of the city. The houses were extended forward, narrowing the alleys and creating the arcades. * Purpose: They originally served as covered work and sales areas for artisans and traders. Today, they protect passersby and shoppers from rain, snow, and sun while strolling and house numerous boutiques, cafés, and shops, often with accompanying vaulted cellars. * Architecture: They are typical of Bern's medieval sandstone buildings and contribute significantly to the distinctive charm of the Old Town.

Bern's Rathausplatz is a historic square in Bern's Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), dominated primarily by the building of the same name. Distinctive feature: The main attraction is the monumental, double-flight staircase on the main façade of the Town Hall, from which historically significant speeches were delivered (e.g., by Winston Churchill in 1946).

The Chutzen marks the highest point on the eleven-kilometer-long Belpberg ridge between the Aare and Gürbe valleys. Despite its modest elevation (892 meters), it offers a phenomenal 360° panoramic view – of the Bernese Alps, the Emmental, the Jura, and often as far as the Aare Valley. ✳️ Sights & Refreshments Remains of the 12th-century Hohburg Castle ruins, accessible above the path to Chutzen. Chutzen Restaurant (at 887 meters) directly at the viewpoint – regional cuisine, terrace with Alpine views, open usually Wednesday to Sunday until 10:00 p.m. Memorial stone for John F. Kennedy in memory of Hungary's desire for freedom, discreetly placed at the highest point.

Christ Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul, Bern At Rathausgasse 2, right next to the Gothic town hall, you will find our neo-Gothic church, which was built between 1858 and 1864 and is considered an important building of this period. The ceiling paintings and the colored windows date from the Art Nouveau period. The choir was redesigned in 1998. The church serves as the episcopal church of the Christian Catholic bishop of Switzerland. The bishop's chair is therefore placed in the choir. St. Peter and Paul does not have large bells. Nevertheless, the imposing building in the center of Bern is something special: It is not only the episcopal church of the Christian Catholic diocese of Switzerland, but was also the first Roman Catholic church building in the state of Bern after the Reformation. The building itself, consecrated in 1864, is the most important example of an architectural movement that is extremely rare in Switzerland, the "dogmatic neo-Gothic." It also stands in a very unusual place: a Roman Catholic church right next to the seat of government of a traditionally Reformed city! This unique feature is thanks to the charismatic priest of what was then a very small Roman Catholic community: Antoine Baud (1805–1867) managed to allay the Reformed government's vague fears of its "Rome-controlled" citizens and even motivate them to cooperate, going so far as to provide the exclusive building site right next to the town hall free of charge. The ambitious building, which was handed over to the newly established Christian Catholic community in 1874, was the work of Edouard Deperthes (1833–1898) from Reims, who was only 23 years old at the time - a French cathedral seen through the eyes of the 19th century. The interior is characterized by solemn calm, spacious and dignified. The most unusual piece of equipment is the transparent veil (1998), which floats freely in the choir. In accordance with the decision of the Council of Ephesus in 431, it shows the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God and, true to the sparse evidence of the Bible, as a mysterious figure that can only be guessed at in shadows.
