Easy to moderately difficult route, perfect for warm days as there's plenty of shade. There's also a superbly maintained outdoor pool for cooling off, as well as the absolutely charming Café Goldmarie with delicious cappuccino and cake. Highly recommended as a reward after a lap around the lake :)

It is not made of limestone (calcium carbonate, as its name suggests), but of gypsum (hydrated calcium sulfate) near the surface and an unweathered anhydrite (pure calcium sulfate) at its core. Among the lakes of East Holstein, the Great Segeberg Lake is distinguished by its unique origins. After a salt dome containing gypsum and anhydrite rock rose to near the surface due to salt tectonics, groundwater released after the thawing of the glacial permafrost gradually dissolved rock salt and gypsum in the subsurface and leached cavities (subrosion). The overlying rock and sedimentary layers subsided, leaving behind depressions that filled with water. This resulted in the formation of several lake basins, initially covered by a continuous body of water. After a natural lowering of the lake level, possibly caused by a sinkhole at a later date, the original body of water divided into the Great Segeberg Lake and the much smaller Klüthsee to the northeast. The Great Segeberg Lake is part of the gypsum karst landscape of Bad Segeberg and is thus related to the Kalkberg and its cave.

Bad Segeberg (kf). Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with a view of the Great Segeberg Lake – this is possible again from Thursday, October 17, at the Goldmarie am See. Jan-Hendrik Stahlberg, Britta Fischer, and their team are kicking off the winter season. They are offering a personalized breakfast in addition to the existing menu of lunch, savory snacks, and coffee and cake during opening hours from Thursday to Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m. "To ensure as many guests as possible can enjoy breakfast, we have two seating times," says Jan-Hendrik Stahlberg. The Goldmarie am See is open until 5 p.m. on these days during the winter season and invites you to enjoy a relaxing time in the café. Events outside of opening hours are also possible upon request for corporate events or groups. Inquiries and reservations can be made by calling 0 45 51 / 9 08 44 57 or by emailing info@goldmarieamsee.de. Anyone interested in supporting the Goldmarie am See service team part-time for 20 hours or more is also welcome to apply. From December 9, 2024, to February 12, 2025, the Goldmarie am See team will be on holiday. "We look forward to your visit before and after the break," says Jan-Hendrik Stahlberg.

The further you get from Bad Segeberg, the quieter and more secluded the path becomes – at least in winter. After rain or during thaws, it can sometimes be very muddy.
