Good place for a rest and a foot bath

At first glance, a relic from ancient times, the octagon turns out to be a reference to the sun's varying positions throughout the year. It offers a beautiful view of the countryside and even a trash can along the path.

There is a comfortable seating area and a bench right next to the Schmale Aue.

The hiking trail runs above the old route, which is still clearly visible in parts. It is also possible to walk along the route itself, although this is very difficult in some places due to overgrowth, for example, in Marxen itself.

In 2002, the town and parish celebrated the 800th anniversary of the first documented mention of Jesteburg. Visible evidence of the parish's long history is the small bell, which is estimated to have been made in 1190 and is therefore the oldest in the Lüneburg region. The church is named after Bishop Martin of Tours, who, around 334, as an eighteen-year-old guard officer in Amiens, shared his coat with a beggar in the middle of winter and thus became the patron saint of the poor. The first documented mention of a church in Jesteburg dates from 1202. Visible evidence of the parish's long history is the small bell, which is estimated to have been made in 1190 and is therefore the oldest in the Lüneburg region. This bell originally hung in the stone bell tower of the medieval predecessor church. Since 1768, the bell has hung in the wooden bell tower in front of the church building, which was built in 1841/42 according to plans by Friedrich Hellner. The simple cubic structure made of unplastered brick and a tiled roof has four by three window axes. It is 19.8 meters long and 12.8 meters wide. The height to the eaves is 7.8 meters. Inside, a gallery runs around all four sides. On three sides, simple round columns in Doric order support the gallery. There was no organ in the old church. For the new building, the workshop of court organ builder Ernst Wilhelm Meyer from Hanover made the instrument in 1843, which is still played today in church services and at concerts.
