The Donaustauf Castle ruins are the remains of a hilltop castle situated on a 424-meter-high promontory overlooking the Danube River, above the town of Donaustauf in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg, Bavaria. The town of Donaustauf developed in the Middle Ages as a burgher settlement under the protection of the castle's powerful fortifications. The site is listed as a protected historical monument in Donaustauf under file number D-3-75-130-8. It is also listed as an archaeological site in the Bavarian Atlas under file number D-3-6939-0042 as a "fortified hilltop settlement of the Late Hallstatt/Early La Tène period, archaeological findings in the area of the medieval Donaustauf Castle ruins." Since April 6, 1986, the castle ruins have belonged to the town of Donaustauf. From 1997 onward, the town secured and restored the site. The castle grounds were already inhabited around 500 BC. A Celtic fortification of unknown size and significance from the late Hallstatt period was discovered here around 894 BC, as excavations in the northeast side of the lower outer bailey revealed in 1981. Between 914 and 930 AD, Bishop Tuto of Regensburg had a castle built here to defend against Hungarian invasions. The castle is mentioned as castellum quod dicitur Stufo between 894 and 930. The name stouf is the Old High German word for a conical rock or hilltop. In the 11th century, the castle held significant strategic importance under the Prince-Bishopric of Regensburg. In 1132, the castle is documented as castrum Episcopi Tuonustouphen, meaning that the castle was then the property of the Bishop of Regensburg. In 1132, 1146, and 1161, the castle was conquered and partially destroyed by the Bavarian dukes, who unsuccessfully attempted to extend their rule over Regensburg. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa is said to have spent the night of September 7-8, 1156, at the castle, before riding from there to the Imperial Diet in the meadows near Barbing on the morning of September 8. The bishops of Regensburg used the castle as a residence at times, for example, Albert I (1217-1259), and had it administered by ministeriales (unfree knights). Due to a lack of funds, the Prince-Bishopric mortgaged the castle several times in the 13th century. The Dominican Albertus Magnus, who was Bishop of Regensburg, wrote a commentary on the Gospel of Luke at the castle. In the summer of 1324, Bishop Nicholas of Regensburg hid at the castle from the legate of the Archbishop of Salzburg. ] .... Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgruine_Donaustauf

A lovely inn with a wonderful beer garden in the summer, right next to a small weir with play equipment for children. The food is also very good, and it's a great place to refuel before or after a hike.

Walhalla near Donaustauf offers a sweeping view of the Danube and the surrounding landscape. From its elevated position, the river is clearly visible as it winds through the plain. The banks are lined with forests and fields, forming a diverse cultural landscape. On clear days, the view extends far into the Danube plain. The view is framed by the architecture of the neoclassical temple building, creating a striking connection between the building and the river landscape.
