In the Middle Ages, Waagegasse was anything but a quiet side street. It was a central location for the staple right. All merchants traveling through Erfurt were obligated to unload their goods here, weigh them, and offer them for sale for a specific period. The alley was deliberately built very narrow so that no cart could sneak past the city inspectors and the scales.

The Roman is a statue erected in 1591 and now located in the fish market opposite the historic town hall. It replaced the destroyed statue of Saint Martin from 1448.
