The current building is a Gothic Revival replica from 1894, constructed on the site of the original two-story brick structure from the 14th century. It served as a prison until the 19th century and was severely damaged after a lightning strike in May 2024, which completely destroyed one tower and severely damaged the other.

Basedow was first mentioned in a document in 1247. The oldest part of the village church also dates from this period: a rectangular choir built of fieldstone masonry. A three-bay nave was added to it in the 15th century. The tall neo-Gothic tower was only added during a restoration between 1855 and 1857. From 1357 until the end of World War II in 1945, the village was the seat of the Hahn family, who not only had an elaborate palace built here, but also decisively influenced the design of the village church in the 16th and 17th centuries. Because of its unusually rich and uniform interior, the church holds special significance for Mecklenburg's church and art history. We were fortunate that a local history enthusiast arranged for us to tour the church during our visit. History of the Old Sheepfold in Basedow: The Old Sheepfold is the oldest of the stable buildings dating back to the 18th century. Here, Merinos, highly prized throughout Germany, were raised until the mid-20th century. German sheep farmers met here annually for the famous Basedow Ram Auction, which was also a popular folk festival for the villagers. The best rams cost 10,000 Reichsmarks before the war.
