At the end of Bad Ems' spa promenade is the Römerquelle spring. Those who descend the steps of this open-plan building, built in the style of a small temple, can drink the mineral water that springs from here. Bottling is not permitted.

Jakob "Jacques" Offenbach *1819 +1880 born in Cologne and died in Paris. He came to Bad Ems, for example, because of gambling (which was forbidden in France). But he also came to compose. From 1873 onwards, despite his slim figure, he struggled with gout.

The former imperial spa was a meeting place for the prominent figures of the nobility, art and scholarship. Nowhere else - not in Berlin, not in Stockholm and not in St. Petersburg - did people get as close to a monarch as on the spa promenades of Bad Ems. Emperor Wilhelm I took a spa treatment here, as did Tsar Alexander II. Dostoyevsky wrote his "Brothers Karamazov" and Richard Wagner worked on his opera "Parzifal" at Balmoral Castle. Jacques Offenbach even worked as concertmaster in Bad Ems for 12 years. Some of his works were premiered here, in the Marble Hall.
