I would recommend to do this section downhill. and if you do the pouāki circuit: do it clockwise! The steps are never ending. Also the forrest section is long and full of slippery roots. Hiking poles are recommended.

Don’t expect too much: small pond and only if the conditions are right you see reflections. I found this a typical “instagram v.s. reality” spot. 😉 Mt Taranaki is impressive tough and beautiful area for hiking!

Anyone who wants to go up to the hut has to climb about 3,500 steps

Great place to start the e.g the Pouakai Crossing (make sure to book the shuttle in advance) or the summit hike.

Don’t expect to get the perfect picture on the first try. Most of the times the water will cast little waves from the winds or mount Taranaki will be covered by clouds. It is really beautiful though no matter the condition 👍🏼 Just do not expect to get the 10/10 Instagram picture. Enjoy the moment, it’s better either way 😊

The power plant's generator is the oldest in continuous operation in New Zealand and one of the oldest in the world. It was built by the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, between 1899 and 1901. In 1935 the power station was installed to supply tourist accommodation in Dawson Falls in Mt. Egmont National Park. The Dawson Falls Tourist Lodge opened in 1896, but because of its remoteness, it was not connected to electricity suppliers.
