Really idyllic. You can climb a little over the rocks on the right side to get to the upper pools. DANGER: Partly very smooth and slippery.

The power plant's generator is the oldest in continuous operation in New Zealand and one of the oldest in the world. It was built by the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, between 1899 and 1901. In 1935 the power station was installed to supply tourist accommodation in Dawson Falls in Mt. Egmont National Park. The Dawson Falls Tourist Lodge opened in 1896, but because of its remoteness, it was not connected to electricity suppliers. The power plant holds a Pelton wheel, which is driven with water from the Kapuni River through a 635 m long pressure line (pipeline). The Pelton wheel drives a direct current generator, a regulator, a flywheel and a small alternator with a possible output of 74 kW (100 PS).

Wilkies pools are a worthwhile highlight. You can even swim here. But be careful if you climb over the rocks in the river bed, they are damp and quite slippery.

A short walk through the jungle leads to the waterfall. Not necessarily the greatest waterfall in New Zealand, but still nice.

When the weather is clear you have a sensational view from here. There is also a large car park and the Dawson Falls information center. In the parking lot you can stay with a "self contained" camper. We spent a pleasant night here.
