At the Minden waterway junction (on the north-eastern edge of the city of Minden), the Mittelland Canal is led over the Weser in almost 400-meter-long trough bridges. The canal level is about 13 meters above that of the Weser. This saves the canal having to descend and ascend to/from the Weser valley floor. The waterway junction is located within a 174 km-long lock-free section of the canal. Waterways Cross Minden a structure where the canal crosses the Weser

The Wasserstrassenkreuz is a gigantic structure. A mighty trough over the broad Weser valley.

After a long period of planning, construction began in 1906 on what was a gigantic project at the time: the Rhine-Weser Canal. A 341 meter long bridge carries the Mittelland Canal over the Weser, making it one of the largest waterway crossings in the world.

Very impressive sight when you stand on top of the bridge and suddenly a ship comes and drives over it.

A tour along the Weser reflects the diverse landscape of Lower Saxony. First it flows through the mountainous south, in places forcing itself between the towering rocks. There on the Oberweser, as the section up to Minden is called, the tourist importance of the river predominates today. Barges are rare. In summer, passenger ships shuttle between the tranquil towns, canoeists and rowers glide down the Weser - supported by the current. Small ferries serve to supplement the few bridges in this section. Cyclists can also use them to move from bank to bank on the popular Weser cycle path.
