If you've ever tried to plan hiking in Aroostook County, you know how quickly the options can feel overwhelming. With so much wild, beautiful land, it's tough to tell which routes are genuinely worth your time and effort, and which are just filler. That's where we come in. Our komoot community has explored, mapped, and reviewed countless trails here, and we've distilled all that local knowledge into a curated shortlist of the best hiking routes Aroostook County has to offer, saving you all the guesswork.

Hiking in Aroostook County is all about vast forests, rolling hills, and a surprising number of lakes and rivers. You'll find everything from easy walks along scenic gorges to moderate ascents up mountains like Quaggy Jo and Mount Chase, offering panoramic views. The region splits into distinct zones, from the varied trails of Aroostook State Park to the more remote Deboullie Public Reserved Land, ensuring there's a landscape for every mood. While you can find year-round adventure, fall brings particularly vibrant foliage.

If you only do one hike, make it the North Peak – South Peak loop from Aroostook State Park. At 2.4 miles (3.8 km), it's an easy win for big views over Echo Lake. For a more challenging but incredibly rewarding day, we'd point you towards the Mount Chase Trail, a moderate 3.3 miles (5.3 km) path leading to truly panoramic vistas. With more than 140 hikers having already explored these trails with komoot, you can trust you're in good company.

A large multi-use forest trail system on the edge of Edmundston with more than 60 km of singletrack and connector routes. Although the network is designed with mountain biking in mind, hikers use it regularly thanks to its well-built paths, clear junction signage, and varied terrain. Expect packed-earth tread with roots, a few short climbs, and occasional boardwalks in wetter sections. Routes range from easier rolling trails to more technical, narrow segments in the higher forest. Main access points include Rue Nadeau, Chemin Canada Road, and the Mont Farlagne outdoor centre, all with posted trail maps to help plan your loop.

Mount Chase is a 2,414-foot peak to the east of Upper Shin Pond. The upper part of the trail is tough to run do to being so steep and rocky, but the views make the trek worthwhile. There are a lot of dirt roads at the base of the mountain that are great for running, too.
