Schiplaken Castle is an old medieval castle site with a characteristic high court and farmyard. The 18th-century neoclassical castle was set on fire by the Germans in 1914 and was rebuilt in its original style after the war. Once a sturdy motte castle from the 11th century, Het Steen grew into a beautiful Renaissance castle that played a key role in the defense of Brabant against the Mechelaars for centuries. The castle is picturesquely situated in a meander of the Barebeek, surrounded by old moats and close to the Zenne, and breathes history - from knightly battles to Spanish garrisons. The most famous resident was Peter Paul Rubens, who spent his last summers here, painted, partied with artist friends such as Van Dyck and Teniers, and immortalized the surrounding nature on canvas.

Het Steen and appurtenances (Steendreef 77): protected monument (28/10/1948) in Flemish Renaissance style. Only the facades and roofs of the main building and outbuildings, with the exception of the stables and sheds from the first half of the 19th century, are protected. On the left in front of 't Steen, popularly known as 'Het Rubenskasteel', our attention goes to the second frame. Here we are looking in the direction of Perk where Rubens' friend David Teniers lived. Is that how Rubens saw it in his time? The castle grew out of a motte, a heavy stone residential tower on a hill, surrounded by water. The oldest known owner of the first castle was probably Rudolf van Wilre, who had the Steenvaart or the connection between the Barebeek and the Zenne dug in 1259. Later this was filled in and is now the toevaartdreef. In a deed from 1304 there was mention of a castle in white stone. It was a feudal castle, with towers and moats, like most castles from that time, comparable to the Steen in Antwerp or the Kantersteen in Brussels. As an advanced defense position it played its role for centuries in the wars between the people of Mechelen and Brussels.

After the castle on the Borgtberg burned down during the Grimbergen War (1141-1159), the Lords of Grimbergen built a new residence at the place called "Boksem", about 600 m south of the village centre and the Norbertine abbey. This probably did not happen until the end of the 13th or in the 14th century, as no deeds were signed at the castle in Grimbergen in the 13th century. This castle was also demolished down to its foundations after a siege in 1488 by Maximilian of Austria and in 1489 by Duke Albert of Saxony. Reconstruction began at the end of the 15th century, possibly on the old foundations. The map book of the abbey (1699) and the copper engraving by Sanderus (1727) show a walled castle on the north side preceded by a walled farmyard. (Inventory of Immovable Heritage)

Laeken Castle, built in 1782, is surrounded by a large 120 ha park. The residence then bore the name of Schonenberg. Under Napoleon, Schonenberg became a military headquarters, and even a prison. Rebuilt several times, the castle then passed, after the revolts against William I, into the hands of the Belgian State, which made it the residence of Leopold I. All our kings, except Albert II, had their residence there.

The Castle of Laeken is one of the royal residences in Belgium. It is located in Laeken, part of the city of Brussels since 1921, in the north of the Brussels region. It is surrounded by a 120-hectare park, which also includes the Royal Greenhouses. Nearby are also the royal residences Stuyvenberg and Belvedère and the Church of Our Lady, where the royal family is buried. Officially it is the summer residence of the king, but in practice all Belgian kings – except Albert II – have made it their main residence. The Royal Palace of Brussels, which is a 7 km drive from the castle, is the official seat of the court and is used as a working palace. The castle is state property, but a large part of the park and the greenhouses belong to the Royal Donation.

No flowers except ice flowers in winter? Not so in the Meise Botanical Garden. It is one of the largest and most biodiverse of its kind in Europe and Father Frost's cold hand has no power here - in the greenhouses, of course. All year round you will find orchids and rare plants, valuable and partly ancient cacti and palm trees. Mother nature offers everything that her green womb has to offer. But you can also discover a lot outside in the spacious garden. The hoarfrost glistens on dried fruit stands and grasses, the snow is heavy. The buds are already swelling, the kittens jumping, soon the snowdrops are ringing and the winterlings are turning blue - nature knows no standstill. During the winter idyll from December 10th to January 8th, the garden is bathed in magical lights, light installations with music along a 3.5 kilometer long path will enchant you and (re) awaken your belief in elves and fairies. The garden is open until 11 p.m. on these evenings. Our tip: A mulled wine in the orangery, the garden's self-service restaurant. The lord of the castle used to winter his "orange trees" and other exotic plants here - now you can warm up and strengthen yourself here.

Sturdy walking shoes are a must. In winter and spring the path is clearly visible. During the summer months, the blackberries can sometimes overgrow the path.

The current Terlinden castle is said to have its origins in the Roman settlement in Elewijt and Schiplaken. In the 12th century there was a Gothic castle, in 1500 a castle in Flemish Renaissance. The Terlinden family bought the domain in 1897 and built a new castle there. In September 1914 it was looted and burned by the Germans. After 1918 it was re-established and sold. source: Hiking guide - Flanders route GR 128

The painter Pieter Paul Rubens bought this Renaissance castle in 1635. He spent the last 5 summers of his life there with Helena Fourmet, his 38th younger second wife. He painted some important works there and gave great parties in the company of other famous figures, such as Van Dyck, Jordaens, Teniers, and many noblemen. The castle was already mentioned in the 13th century. The implantation of this moated domain in a meander of the Baerbeek, near the Senne and halfway between Brussels and Mechelen, would indicate a very old site, part of the defense line of Brabant. The name 'Stone' would refer to a square 'stone' tower mentioned until the early 18th century. source: hiking guide Flanders route GR 128
