Località Modanella is a small village, or frazione, within the municipality of Rapolano Terme in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is renowned for the Castello di Modanella, a medieval castle that stands as the focal point of the area. The castle's origins date back to the 12th century when it was constructed by the noble Cacciaconti family. In the 14th century, ownership transitioned to the Piccolomini family, who maintained possession for several centuries. The castle has undergone various modifications over the years but has retained its fortress-like appearance. Its architectural features include a well-preserved outer wall with towers featuring sloped bases. Within the castle grounds, the courtyard boasts a charming loggia and gardens, offering a glimpse into its historical grandeur. Adjacent to the castle is the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, a medieval structure that once fell under the patronage of the Piccolomini family. In the 19th century, the church underwent a restoration that imparted a neoclassical facade, while its interior reflects 17th-century renovations. Notable artworks within the church include "The Supper at Emmaus," attributed to Raffaello Vanni, and a revered 1657 wooden crucifix, which is central to a local festival held annually on the first Friday of March. The Castello di Spedaletto is a remarkable castle located in the Val d'Orcia, right along the road that leads from Pienza to Bagno Vignoni. This old castle, which was extensively rebuilt in the Middle Ages, has been fortified and provided with a walled enclosure. The walled front door dates from 1446.  It is now an agriturismo, run by Laura and her family, offering an unforgettable stay in the heart of the Val d'Orcia.

In the current village is still visible a tall tower, formerly the keep, reduced in height with a high chamfered base and topped by a 'redondone' (dripstone) to delimit its vertical feature and a small window on each side. Within the walled circuit is the church of San Biagio, of Romanesque origin.

Vignoni Alto, a picturesque medieval village perched on a hill, offers breathtaking views of Castiglione d'Orcia and the Val d'Orcia. With its rich history dating back to the eleventh century, the village is a living monument of feudal times, with remains such as a high tower and the Romanesque church of San Biagio. Despite its small population of only 28 inhabitants, Vignoni Alto retains its unique charm and character. The spectacular views of the Orcia Valley below complete the visit to this well-preserved Tuscan fortified hill town.
