Monteriggione lies like a majestic crown on one of the graceful hills in the Siena area and owes its beauty to the sharply defined silhouette of its round defensive wall with fourteen square towers. This Ghibelline outpost that Siena had built in the direction of Florence at the beginning of the 13th century is mentioned by Dante in his Divine Comedy. The village, which is completely enclosed by the defensive wall, is located around an elongated square with a well. The two entrance gates are almost directly opposite each other on either side of the square. On one side is a small Romanesque-Gothic church, while from a corner on the other side of the square, a small street describes a semicircle to the next corner.
