At the unloading point for tankers, liquid and gaseous chemicals were delivered and pumped via a pipe system across Main Street to the adjacent factory site. The chemical plant supplied in this way was the first of its kind in Germany. It originated from the factory founded in 1842 by Ernst Sell, where tar waste from coal coking was distilled, aniline was extracted, and products such as disinfectants and mothballs were manufactured. The plant experienced its economic heyday under Sell's successor, Karl Oehler. He created new chemical compounds from the tar and became famous for synthetic blue pigments, for which he even received an award at the 1862 World's Fair. In 1905, the plant was sold to the company Griesheim-Elektron and continued to prosper. The Offenbach chemists Leopold Laska and Arthur Zitscher played a significant role in this success. They created compounds with naphthol-AS dyes, with which the plant is associated and was a leader. In 1925, the plant was incorporated into IG Farben and became independent again in 1946 as the Naphtol plant. This plant was acquired by Hoechst in 1953, before being sold to Clariant in 1997 and finally closed in 2010. NO 1 5 RASH
