Park Abbey is considered one of the best-preserved abbeys in Western Europe. Besides the abbey and its church, the complex also includes an estate and extensive grounds with meadows and ponds. Although the abbey largely dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, its history goes back to 1129, when the Duke of Brabant gifted his hunting grounds in Leuven to the Premonstratensians. The Premonstratensians, or Norbertines, were considered wealthy and powerful and were therefore called the "Park Princes." They led a privileged life and devoted themselves to art and literature. The heath was later converted into agricultural land, later a large part of this area became birch fields and the western part of the Chartreuz Forest became forested. Until the French Revolution, the area surrounding the Chartreuz Forest was the property of the Carthusian Order. In the period of the Brabant revolution (1789) and the French invasion (1792), the goods of the churches and monasteries were secularized and dissolved. Quite a few of those properties came into the hands of OCMWs. For example, a number of plots in the Chartreuzenbos also became the property of the OCMW of Leuven. Interesting memorial site with decorated concrete helmets. Also a great place to take a break with picnic tables. The monument is not visible from the road, but one large concrete helmet has been placed in the raised area next to the road so that you can see where you need to be.
