Piazza dei Signori, Padua For the people of Padua, a stroll to the squares of the historic center, such as Piazza della Frutta, Piazza delle Erbe, and Piazza dei Signori, means immersing oneself in the markets that traditionally enliven the city every morning. Shopping is simultaneously a pleasure, a social occasion, a kind of daily ritual. But it's also worthwhile to look up and admire the architecture of the houses, balconies, and historic buildings that frame them. Piazza dei Signori is surrounded on its two main sides by two wings with colonnades, elegantly enhanced by terraces with antique wrought-iron balconies. The two shorter sides are bordered by the Church of San Clemente and the Palazzo del Capitanio with its clock tower, whose colonnade leads to the Corte Capitaniato and the nearby square of the same name. Here once stood the Castello dei Carraresi, which today houses the University of Padua with its Faculty of Literature and Philosophy and the rooms painted by Altichiero. On the south side of the square stands the elegant Loggia del Consiglio, or Gran Guardia, the 16th-century building where the city's Maggior Consiglio (Great Council) used to meet. The wide staircase leading to the loggia and the council chamber on the main floor are particularly worth seeing. Piazza della Frutta, Padua In the bustling Piazza della Frutta, fish and game, eggs and poultry, roast meats such as porchetta and boiled oxtail were sold; herbs, vegetables, and, not least, precious birds like falcons could also be found. The two side staircases that provided access to the majestic Palazzo della Ragione were named after the goods displayed and sold: they were called Scala delle Erbe (Herbs) and Scala degli Osei (Birds). Since the end of the 12th century, a popular fruit and vegetable market with wooden stalls on wheels has been held here. In the square stands a small column, formerly called the "Peronio": at its base, it was customary to sell wooden clogs and boots, called "perones" in Latin. This Romanesque column, still visible today at the entrance to Via Breda, is surmounted by a capital adorned with a pumpkin, a palm tree, a quince tree, and a pear tree at its corners. Above the capital is a block of Istrian stone bearing the coat of arms of the city of Padua, depicting a shield with a cross and the image of Saint Prosdocimo, who, according to tradition, was the city's first bishop. On the day of the "zobia masa," the first Thursday in May, members of the brotherhood of the "Strazzaroli," the peddlers and secondhand dealers, would put on a show in the piazza by climbing the "Cuccagna Tree." The grand prize was a bag and gloves, which is why the event was also known as the "Festa della borsa" (Bag Festival). To preserve the memory of this tradition, a bag is carved into the marble of the building at the corner of Via Marsilio da Padova and Via Gorizia. A very nice day trip. The northern part, in particular, is very scenic. The small town of Este is a real gem.

The Diana Portal in Valsanzibio is the monumental entrance to the Garden of Villa Barbarigo, a symbol of spirituality and power, designed in the 17th century by Luigi Bernini. Located in the heart of the Historic Garden of Villa Barbarigo in Valsanzibio (Padua), the Diana Portal—also known as Diana's Pavilion—was the main waterway access to the noble estate during the 17th and 18th centuries. This majestic portal is not only a Baroque architectural masterpiece, but also represents the beginning of the allegorical path of purification and salvation commissioned by Saint Gregory Barbarigo. https://www.valsanzibiogiardino.com/it/portfolio-item/portale-diana/
