9월 19, 2025, Pegnitztal Ost Nature Reserve
One of my favorite natural areas in Nuremberg. It's easily accessible from the city, making it perfect for spontaneous evening strolls.

Wöhrder Wiese, Nuremberg The Wöhrder Wiese is an inner-city green space along the Pegnitz River and Lake Wöhrder in the center of Nuremberg, south of the Wöhrd district. It is part of the Franconian Sand Axis. Below the weir of the Lower Wöhrder Lake, the Wöhrder Wiese is bordered by the Pegnitz River and its southern branch. The area is intensively used by recreationists and athletes, as well as for leisure and cultural events. From May to September, the Wöhrder Wiese is home to the Sensory Experience Center, as well as beer gardens in the summer. Cyclists and pedestrians cross the Wöhrder Wiese on their way from eastern Nuremberg to the city center. The six-hour run takes place annually in March on a circular route. Wöhrder See, Nuremberg Wöhrder See, the youngest of Nuremberg's waterways, is a popular local recreation area in the heart of the city, providing a natural habitat for endangered species. It is not a natural lake, but was created by damming the Pegnitz River, which flows through it. The idea for an inner-city lake existed as early as the 1930s. The project was approved for implementation in October 1959. In addition to the City of Nuremberg, the State Water Management Authority and the Middle Franconia District were involved in the planning and construction. Recreational concerns were not the only priority in the design. The lake is also part of the extensive flood protection measures after the Second World War. Construction work began in 1968 with the Lower Wöhrder See and continued until 1972. The sand trap above the waterway was built between 1972 and 1975. The final construction phase of the Upper Wöhrder Lake was completed in 1981. Text / Source: Nürnberg Infos.de / Nürnberger Nachrichten https://nuernberginfos.de/gewaesser-nuernberg/woehrder-see.php

The bridge over the A9 near the Nuremberg-East motorway junction is a resource-efficient landmark with a contemporary design. The bridge was built economically using detailed calculations and an optimized assembly concept. Bernhard Hauke spoke to bridge construction engineer Daniel Schäfer. The client wanted a bridge as a symbolic gateway to the Nuremberg region. How did this sculptural approach influence the bridge designs? The first approach was to use an arched structure for the bridge; based on the archway. As the requirements increased, we came to the conclusion that a self-braced arch was the best solution. At the same time, I wanted to use the bridge to show that bridge construction can combine symbolic power, modern design, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. That's why we opted for the network arch and slim, clearly shaped steel box profiles. It was important to us that the bridge looked good from all directions. Also for the Fischbach residents who regularly walk over the bridge Source: https://ingd4c.org/blog/2021/06/30/IBK21-Interview-Netzwerkbogenbr%C3%BCcke.html

This route is not for normal cyclists, only for mountain bikers; very steep climbs with lots of roots and hardly passable.

History of the Tullnau pond: Tullnau: Nuremberg district (located east of the city center); The name refers to a floodplain through which a wooden water pipe (Tulln) made of pipes (Dillen, Thüllen) was laid. The Tullnau mill was the second to be supplied by the Goldbach. The pond in the Tullnau was created by damming the stream. The mill used to be located at its outlet, which was first mentioned in 1465 as a hammer mill. Definitely worth seeing and beautifully quiet, considering it is in the middle of the city!
