The Buchfarter Felsenburg, located on the steep shell limestone slope of the Illm River, is the only structure of its type in Central Germany and of particular cultural and historical significance. It was originally a castle complex belonging to the Counts of Orlamünde. Around the 12th century, 12 chambers of varying sizes were carved into the steep rock face in a row extending approximately 110 meters in length and at a height of 40 meters above the Illm River. The chambers were connected by a Romanesque hillside wall. Some wall remains and a round-arched doorway are still visible today. The rock castle had no military significance in the late Middle Ages. However, it served as a fully developed, impregnable refuge for a long line of counts, dukes, and electors.

The Carolinenturm on the Kötsch is a very popular destination. It is one of the three towers of the Thuringian Three Towers hiking trail and also a stamping point for Touringen (No. 345). From here you have a great view and perspective. The rest areas and benches around the Carolinenturm invite you to linger. Absolutely worth it!👍

A monument and landmark of the Gönna Valley! Built around 1740, the post mill in Krippendorf served as a guide for combatants during the Double Battle of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806. According to legend, it was spared because the miller's three daughters fell to their knees before Napoleon. The surrounding villages in the Gönna Valley fared differently, being pillaged. The post mill also survived World War II. It did not survive Storm Kyrill in 2007, but it was rebuilt.
