The Rickelsbüller Koog is a nature reserve covering approximately 534 hectares in the North Frisian district – the northwesternmost point of mainland Germany lies there, directly on the border dam near Rodenäs-Markhäuser. Since its embankment in 1981 and official designation as a protected area in 1982, it offers a mosaic of wet meadows, reed beds, and inland waters that developed from the former mudflats and salt marshes. For birdwatchers, the Koog is a true paradise: it is one of the most important resting and breeding areas along the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast. Species such as pink-footed goose, barnacle goose, redshank, black-tailed godwit, dunlin, knot, and many more rest and breed here in large numbers. Particularly impressive are the now regular sightings of white-tailed eagles – a testament to the ecological importance of the area. The landscape is crisscrossed by easily accessible dikes and observation points, including an observation hut. Ideal for nature lovers: binoculars are a must to experience the vibrant birdlife in action. The circular trail – for example, part of the "WWF Tour – Boundless Birdlife" – runs approximately 13 km through the area, offering extensive experiences of the open landscape and the opportunity to experience the northernmost point of the mainland. The Koog is accessible via Rodenäs: By bike or car, you can reach a free parking area directly next to the dike via the border road. From there, paths lead into the protected area – the clear landscape, the rich birdlife, and the peacefully flowing border make the destination a special natural location.

The Hindenburg Dam is an 11-kilometer-long railway embankment that connects the North Frisian island of Sylt with the mainland of Schleswig-Holstein. It was opened on June 1, 1927 and named after the then President of the German Reich, Paul von Hindenburg. Construction began in 1923 and lasted four years, using over 3 million cubic meters of sand and clay and 120,000 tons of stone. The dam was built to provide a reliable transport connection to Sylt, which was previously heavily dependent on the tides and winter ice conditions in the Wadden Sea. Before the dam was built, travelers and goods had to get to Sylt by ship, which was often made difficult by natural conditions. Today, the Hindenburg Dam is used exclusively for rail traffic. More than 100 trains cross the dam every day, including the car train that brings vehicles and their passengers to the island. Since 1972, the dam has been double-tracked to cope with increased demand. The dam is located in a particularly protected area of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, which is why hiking on the adjacent mudflats is not permitted. The dam has changed the flow conditions, which is partly blamed for the loss of land on the southern tip of Sylt. Despite repeated discussions about renaming the dam because of the controversial figure of Hindenburg, the name remains to this day. The dam is an important part of Sylt's infrastructure and a fascinating example of engineering and adaptation to the natural conditions of the Wadden Sea.

The Norddeich-Siltoft border crossing connects Germany with Denmark at its westernmost border post before entering the Rickelsbüller Koog and the connection between the Danish and German dikes. A disused barrier reminds us of the small post's operating hours, the equally small border house seems to be in a deep sleep, but it is not. It is open during the day and can be visited. It is heated and even has a clean toilet. I found shelter there from a rain shower and was able to view everything in peace.
