Imposing barrage on the Lech River. At barrage 22, the water is diverted from the Lech River to the Lochbach, where three additional, smaller weirs are located. On the northern edge of Augsburg, the wide, parallel Lech Canal branches off towards Meitingen and only flows back into the riverbed after more than 20 kilometers. Along this Lech Canal are three power plants built between 1898 and 1922 (Gersthofen, Langweid, and Meitingen canal power plants). The Wellenburger Allee is an impressive linden tree avenue in the south of Augsburg. It stretches over two kilometers from the Wertach Bridge in the Göggingen district to Wellenburg Castle. With over 350 winter linden trees, it forms a striking visual axis and underlines the historical significance of the castle. The first trees were planted in 1840, more followed between 1880 and 1920. The avenue has been a nature reserve since 1975. A storm in June 2013 damaged numerous trees, but they were replanted. Today, the Wellenburger Allee is a popular destination for walks and bike rides. It connects urban areas with the rural charm of Wellenburg Castle and offers a green oasis for those seeking relaxation.
