The northern end of the city wall is the Sandauer Tor, which was built in 1630 in the existing city wall. The name of the gate was chosen after a small market spot that was partially destroyed in the urban war in the 14th century and a quarter of an hour downstream. Because of many arson, the residents of Sandau settled on the Vorderen and Hintere Anger. The renewed expansion of the city became necessary in order to offer the new citizens protection within the wall.
