The Ocean Bridge in Harpstedt, Lower Saxony, leads to Little America. The 99-year-old connection originated as a guesthouse, and is now popular with hikers and cyclists. Of course, this doesn't mean the United States, and "ocean" doesn't mean the Atlantic. Rather, this historic structure is a pedestrian and bicycle bridge located in the Wildeshausen Geest region of Lower Saxony. The "Ocean Bridge" is the only way to cross the Delmetal River between the Harpstedt Forest and the Harpstedt district of Little America. Or, as the nature park's website puts it: "The wooden bridge connects the village of Little America with the rest of the world." In the Ochtum lowlands there are numerous bridges to cross ditches and rivers. A beautiful local recreation area in the city.

History The settlement of Vieland is documented in 1158 in the Bremen Charter Book (Vol. 1, p. 46), when Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) permitted the cultivation of the quarries of the insula Bremensis between the Weser and Ochtmund (= mouth of the Ochtum). The name insula Bremensis indicates that the river probably had a tributary to the Weser near Arsten. The Ochtum was later also written Ochen, Ochtmoni or Oggen. In 1234 the Battle of Altenesch took place. From Arsten to the mouth, the Ochtum became part of the Bremen Landwehr around 1309 with the Arster Tower, the Katten Tower (Kattenthorn) and the War Tower (Torn to de Warebrughen). The consent of the Counts of Oldenburg to widen the Ochtum was obtained as early as 1297. The first of the Ochtum regulations was in 1400. In 1571 the Ochtum dikes broke as a result of flooding from the Upper and Middle Weser region.

Course The Ochtum is formed in Lower Saxony around 10 kilometers southeast of Bremen city center near Weyhe through the union of the Süstedter Bach, which widens here to form the Kirchweyher See, with the slightly smaller but longer Hache. After a good 4 kilometers of northwesterly flow, it forms the border between Lower Saxony and the state of Bremen. It flows through or passes the Bremen city and districts of Kattenesch, Huchting and Strom. It flows through the park to the left of the Weser and the Ochtumniederung nature reserve near Brokhuchting. Over time, the Ochtum has been redesigned several times. An old arm of the Ochtum runs east past Grolland and joins the new main course (Neue Ochtum) in the nature reserve near Brokhuchting. The relocation became necessary around 1990 for the expansion of Bremen Airport. The Ochtum touches Delmenhorst-Hasbergen and Delmenhorst-Deichhausen and flows between Lemwerder-Altenesch and Bremen-Seehausen via the Ochtumsperwek.

The Ochtum, together with its longest source river, is around 59 kilometers long and is a left tributary of the Weser. The Ochtum flows in Lower Saxony and Bremen on the southwestern edge of the Wesermarsch northwest parallel to the slope of the Syker Geest, from which most of its tributaries flow.

A beautiful area for bike tours, skaters and hikers!

The bridge is super nice, but you should rather push over it because it's very narrow.
