Freiburg's Münsterplatz - archaeology and history After an introductory overview of the state of research, Chapter 1, taking into account the latest excavations, examines the archaeologically tangible burials up to the abolition of the churchyard in 1515 and the renewed use as a military cemetery in the 17th and 18th centuries. This is followed by a discussion of the cemetery's furnishings and in particular the course of the churchyard wall, with Renn partially questioning the phases of the wall's development reconstructed by Ralf Burgmaier in 1996. Chapter 3 explains other functions of the churchyard as a legal and judicial place and as a meeting place. Chapter 4 is devoted to the buildings on and around the square. Renn can show that parts of today's Münsterplatz were built up until the 14th century and that the facades of the surrounding houses were not initially facing the churchyard. It was only when the choir was built in the 14th century that the houses on the square were demolished and the facades of the other houses turned towards the square and magnificently decorated. Although the associated upgrading of the square led to increased building activity, the churchyard wall initially remained standing - as described in Chapter 5 - although sales arbors were added to its outside. It was not until 1785 that the churchyard wall and the corn arbors were torn down and a "representative open space" created. Text / Source: Hypotheses https://oberrhein.hypotheses.org/1384

Hikers should stop here to get some refreshment. Whether it's Brunner's sausage roasting shop, Meier's sausage stand, the organic sizzling stand, or Licht's sausage stand - the Lange Rote has long been a Freiburg institution: The grilled sausage without casing, which measures a full 35 cm, is on a par with the Münster, the Augustinermuseum or the Bächles on the Freiburgers' scale of attractions. So, go ahead and try Freiburg's crispiest landmark on Münsterplatz!

A very beautiful and worth seeing place. The climb to the tower can be reached via a long and narrow wall staircase, and you will be rewarded with a magnificent view. The bellworks can also be viewed, which are also very loud at the right time.

The Freiburg Minster "Our Lady" is today both the parish church and the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. In addition, the Minster is a national cultural monument with one of the most beautiful towers on earth and is one of the few large Gothic churches that were completed in the Middle Ages and survived the numerous wars almost unscathed.

The cycle path is very well developed, but every time I cycled there was a lot of traffic, and there were also a few cyclists on the road who did not know the traffic rules

The Schlossbergturm is a 33.27 meter high observation tower on the Schlossberg. The Schlossberg Tower was erected in 2002 by the Board of Trustees on the Salzbüchslekuppe. For the construction, the architect used 100-year-old Douglas fir trunks from the local Ottilienwald, which fell over due to the severe hurricane Lothar in 1999. The long logs were twisted around the steel staircase. In honor of all donors who made construction possible in 2002, their names were placed on the face of the 153 steps to the top of the tower and can be read when climbing the tower. However, the natural construction with the tree trunks was repeatedly attacked by fungi and pests in the years that followed. In July 2015, the dilapidated logs were finally removed after several rescue attempts. After the tower was inaccessible for a long time, it was finally renewed in 2017 by the board of trustees and the donations they collected. In this step, the tree trunks were replaced by a reliable steel construction. The cost of the renovation was 192,000 euros, but the city expects the galvanized steel pylons to last 100 years. A great highlight. Nice to combine with a short hike on the Schloßberg. The tower is easy to reach from the old town. However, you should be good on foot. After a steep climb, you reach the tower via at least 200 steps 😏

What Cologne is its cathedral, Freiburg is its cathedral. At least there are parallels: Planning and construction were incredibly time-consuming and even today it requires permanent maintenance - it is all the more impressive when you stand in front of it. Apart from that, it is really nice here in the middle of Freiburg. Perfect for ending a bike tour in a pleasant atmosphere.

Except for New Year's Eve, you can take the 251 steps to a platform at any time and enjoy the view of Freiburg.

If you want to step on the gas here, you should have a bell or a loud free run on nice days or at the weekend ;-)

The Schlossberg bears its name because of the "Castrum de Friburch", a hilltop castle that the Zähringer duke Berthold II had built there around 1091. In the following centuries, the history of the Schlossberg is essentially a history of the palaces, castles and fortifications built there. The last fortifications built by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban under French occupation (1677-1679) were blown up by the French so thoroughly before their final withdrawal in 1744/45 that only a cone of rubble and the moat remain from the former castle complex. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlossberg_(Freiburg_im_Breisgau)

Renovations are always going on here! Not surprising for a 900-year-old building (first documented in 1120). Freiburg Minster, by the way, not only boasts the "most beautiful tower in Christendom," but also set a precedent. As the only cathedral completed in the Gothic period, it has been copied countless times in parts (or the Freiburg architects later worked on larger projects – almost like in football today). Just look at Strasbourg, Cologne (the world's largest cathedral), and Ulm (the world's tallest church tower)!

The view tower on the summit of the mountain Rosskopf offers beautiful views of Freiburg, the surrounding Black Forest, the Rhine Valley, the Vosgues and the nearby Kaiserstuhl. It's the perfect spot for a break to take in the views.

I find the Dreisam Tour Freiburg Kirchzarten interesting from a regional perspective. Better than towards Kaiserstuhl.

Over 85 steps you reach the 22 meter high viewing platform of the Schauinsland Tower, actually called "Eugen-Keidel Tower". In good weather you can look into the Vosges and the Swiss Alps. The tower is always open.
