The panel with the four letters "INRI" (also called the title of the cross), which is often seen on cross representations and attached to the longitudinal beam of the cross, is the Latin abbreviation for the words "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum". Such a plaque was then common in the Roman Empire and gave the reason for the conviction or execution. This inscription is documented in the Bible, among other things, in the report of the evangelist John about Jesus' crucifixion. In chapter 19, verse 19 it says, "Pilate also had a tablet made and fixed on top of the cross, with the inscription: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." (Unit translation).
