The Scharzfeld castle ruins are worth a visit. Many information boards provide information about the history of the facility. A restaurant invites you to linger. Many animals such as birds and squirrels can be observed on the circular path around the ruins.

A really great destination, good range of food (restaurant and self-service), friendly hosts and rustically furnished guest room. Value for money completely okay. Accessible via many beautiful paths.

Many informative panels on building materials, geology and history give a picture of the castle at that time...

Everything is thought of here. Children, hikers, cyclists (fill up for free e-bikes). And nice hosts who bring delicious food. In the past, the house belonged to cattle herders who let their cows graze on the surrounding pastures.

Great climb from Barbis (old trees). Also very nice destination for families.

The Großer Knollen is one of the exposed mountains of the southern Harz, from which one has an excellent view of the surrounding area up to the Brocken and Wurmberg. You don't necessarily have to climb the round tower to do this. There is a cozy restaurant with a few seats outside. The landlord has only recently taken over, hospitality is important to him, because he sold us a few cool drinks despite the day off (Monday). Especially in Corona times you should hike here and support the nice restaurateurs. And when you've climbed up, you've earned a cool drink.

The castle is a really extraordinary historical place. The history since the Salian era in the 11th century is clearly explained on boards. The castle was considered impregnable and it stayed that way until 1761, when the French conquered it with massive means during the 7 Years War and then blew it up. So there wasn't much left of the lower castle. In the upper castle, which is cordoned off because it is probably too exposed and dangerous, more remains can be seen. You can go up the stairs to the tunnel that led into the upper castle to get an overview. The location of the gastronomy is nice, which, like everything in Corona times, is unfortunately closed. From there you have a good view of the southern Harz foreland towards Barbis
