On Open Monument Day 2024, we can visit the manor house and also take a quick look inside. Unfortunately, this is not usually possible. But if you get the chance, take it: the house is a discovery. From the inside, it looks much bigger than the view from the street suggests and the preserved stucco ceilings from the 17th century are simply magnificent. The house has been uninhabited since 1996. I keep my fingers crossed that it can be preserved and filled with life again.

First mentioned in the 13th century, Count Finck von Finckenstein acquired the Alt-Madlitz castle estate in 1751. However, the educator of the Prussian kings Friedrich Wilhelm II and Frederick II did not stay there often. It was his son Friedrich Ludwig Karl who first developed the estate into a true court of the muses. Celebrities such as Ludwig Tieck, Achim von Arnim, Wilhelm von Humboldt and Clemens Brentano regularly visited there. Friedrich Ludwig Karl himself developed the plans for the extensive park that extends directly behind the manor house. Cleverly designed visual axes lined with large oak and chestnut trees characterize the oldest English landscape garden in Brandenburg. Finckenstein loved his park so much that he buried his heart there, surrounded by thirteen field stones symbolizing the number of his children. Unfortunately, when we visited in March 2024, all the ponds and even the large lake were almost completely silted up, but it is still worth a walk.

Groß Rietz Castle is one of the most important rural aristocratic residences in Brandenburg. Most of the baroque palaces in Brandenburg were built in the Frederick period. The early building, rare for Brandenburg, is one of the outstanding buildings in the Brandenburg cultural landscape. Today the castle is owned by the Brandenburg Castle Society and is rented out privately. The castle can only be viewed from the outside.

The Heinersdorf mansion, also known as a castle or manor house, is a listed building. It is owned by the municipality and has been vacant since 2001. The building, which dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, was owned by Franz von Meinders, a diplomat in the service of the Great Elector. The valuable original stucco from the Baroque period on the upper floor of the house is probably of Italian origin, comparable to that in Köpenick Palace. The building was extended in 1886 by conversions and extensions by the manor owner Günther Schulz von Heinersdorf and changed again in the 20th century. Every time I visit Fürstenwalde, I don't fail to visit the cathedral. Wonderful: it is an "open church" that has several very committed volunteers. I am particularly fascinated by the fact that despite an almost complete destruction in World War II, an architecturally harmonious church was rebuilt and that you can see the various eras of the redesign (Gothic, Baroque, destruction). Missing columns, different paintings, etc.
