Today's Nature Discovery Center is the only building left behind by the excavator in the village of Wanninchen. Very nice cycle path at Schlabendorfer See

After decades of coal mining, a unique natural paradise with bizarre dunes, new forests, meadows and extensive lakes was created here. Today's nature experience center is the only building that the excavator left behind in the village of Wanninchen. With its panoramic view over the Schlabendorfer Lake and the nature experience areas, it is now a destination for many enthusiastic nature lovers.

The wooden predecessor, which opened in 1999, was already a popular destination for tourist hikes in Calauer Schweiz and a well-known landmark of the surrounding "Plinsdörfer". Due to structural damage and vandalism, the decision to demolish it had to be made in 2014. The decision to demolish it also gave rise to the desire for a replacement building. The municipality of Luckaitztal also approached the town of Calau and found further support for the project. Under the set specifications of being able to build and maintain the new tower from a durable material, with a low-maintenance construction, at an affordable price, research came across an observation tower built in 2003 in Suderburger Land. After an on-site inspection in September 2014 by representatives from the municipality of Luckaitztal, the Altdöbern office and the town of Calau, the decision was made to build an identical tower, with appropriate local adaptations of the project, as a replacement building in Calauer Schweiz.

Here you have a fantastic view of the post-mining landscape. In the Heinz Sielmann Nature Experience Center you will gain an insight into the history of the mining region, learn a lot about the value of nature in today's post-mining landscape and about the work of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation on site. You can visit the exhibition in the house and explore interesting stations and themed trails on the grounds. Picnics are also possible. Unfortunately, Mondays are a day off

The young remaining open-cast mining waters around Wanninchen are now important sleeping places for cranes, Nordic geese and other migratory birds. Here in the nature experience center you will find interesting exhibitions, a boulder garden, a natural playground and a viewing tower as well as various adventure trails.

In 2023, behind the F60 visitor mine, the road to the floating house and 2 parking spaces above the lake will be asphalted/paved (subject to a fee). Plots of land above the lake have been sold or can be bought, the first houses are standing, and my quiet 15 years at the lake are slowly coming to an end. Due to the usable width of the beach of more than 500m, all those looking for peace and quiet will find their place, sometimes it takes a few meters to walk. Except for the time of the Feel Festival, 2023 in mid-July, the area is accessible/driveable. Unfortunately, for a few, it becomes a racetrack, most drive sensibly - as it should be in a place of relaxation. Swimming is possible, on a few days a year there are strong winds and small pieces of coal on the beach. The PH value can still be felt as acidic on sensitive skin. Dogs are best at the north-west end of the beach (200m behind the floating house).
