The Jeetze is a small river that flows picturesquely through the old town of Salzwedel, creating a charming connection between nature and historic city architecture. The half-timbered Renaissance building from 1578 has housed the District Local History Museum since 1932.

The museum, founded in 1911, is one of the oldest museum villages in Germany. A visit to the museum with over 25 residential and commercial buildings is extremely worthwhile and highly recommended.

Founded in 1932, the Johann Friedrich Danneil Museum is an important historical collection and research center in the western Altmark, emerging from the collections of the Altmark Historical Society founded in 1836. The thematic focus of the historical society was also reflected in the collection's main focuses at the time: prehistory and early history, sacred sculpture, guild crafts, seals, coins and weapons. This historical core collection has been continuously expanded and expanded to include other collection groups in the following period. This particularly affected the area of prehistory and early history. Various emergency rescues and years of targeted excavations on the Germanic cremation cemetery in Zethlingen have enabled a number of new archaeological finds to be recorded.
